Character, Series: Edward Elric, Fullmetal Alchemist

Age: 15

Canon Background: Edward's life has been ruled by two things ever since he was very young: Equivalent Exchange, and the saying 'all is one, one is all.' He and his brother, Alphonse, were very young when they started practicing alchemy, ruled under the pretense that in order to gain something, something equal must be given. After their mother died, they begged one Izumi Curtis to teach them properly, and from there, everything went wrong.

They came back to their home in Resembool, a country town in Amestris, and gathered the necessary ingredients for a human body. A drop of blood from each of them became the soul. But after they started the transmutation, it was obvious that it wouldn't work. Edward lost his left leg to the Gate that formed, and Alphonse lost his entire body. Edward, desperate, gave up his right arm to bind his brother's soul to a suit of armor.

The Rockbells, childhood friends of the boys, took them in and kept Ed alive, and it just so happened that Lieutenant Colonel Roy Mustang had received one of the letters the boys had sent out when they realized their mother was sick and were looking for their father, Hohenheim. Roy gave Ed the option of going to Central City and joining the military as a state alchemist before he left, and when he'd gone, Edward asked the Rockbells to make him the best artificial limbs- automail- they could.

He and Al traveled to Central and Edward passed the exam, earning his title of Fullmetal. From there, he was placed under command of Roy Mustang, where he began his search for the Philosopher's Stone, an alchemical substance made from thousands of human lives, to get Alphonse's body back.

AU Background: Edward lives alone (unless we have an Al who's willing to put up with his brother.... :P) since his father left when he was very young and his mother died of an incurable illness. He took up residence close to the school so he would have access to the library- his favorite sport, besides Speeder racing, is reading- and uses his magic to do little odd jobs and keep money flowing.

When he was younger, he got in a serious Speeder accident, and it was feared he would die, if not lose two of his limbs. Well, he didn't die, but his right leg and left arm didn't exactly fare well. Still, with a bit of technology (and a whole lot of magic,) he was able to get some fairly well-functioning mechanical limbs. (Totally don't know if that works in this universe, but I'm trying to come up with a decent explanation for automail. ^^; )

He continued with his magic- when his fifth year started, he announced he wanted to be an all around awesome Mage, much to the chagrin of several teachers- but he does it because maybe there's a way for him to get his arm and leg back. And the prostheses were far from inhibiting; he zooms around on his terrifying Speeder to prove he can still do it even though he's a cripple, as he calls himself.

Occupation: Fifth Year Student training to be a Mage; completely uninterested in technology, save for Speeders.

Any Specialties? Edward's really rather proficient in whatever he does, Magic-wise. He tends to favor Earth-based magic, but also isn't afraid to use other elements, or even tool around with metal and non-magical things. Even though he doesn't find machinery all that interesting, he does think himself the proud owner of the best Speeder this side of the street. After all, with his magic, how can it not be the best?
